How to Scan Arabic Text with the Scanmarker Pro
Scanning Arabic text using the Scanmarker Pro requires adapting the scanning direction to accommodate the language's right-to-left reading style. Here's how to scan text accurately and effectively:
Steps for Scanning Arabic Text
-
Prepare the Text
Open your book or document and place it on a flat surface. Ensure that the text is clear and well-lit for accurate scanning. -
Set the Language
Ensure the Scanmarker Pro is configured to recognize Arabic. You can do this through the Scanmarker app settings on your connected device. -
Position the Pen
Start from the leftmost edge of the text line you want to scan. While Arabic is read from right to left, scanning occurs in the opposite direction—from left to right.
-
Start Scanning
Press the scanning tip lightly on the text and move the pen steadily from left to right across the line. The pen’s built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) will capture the text accurately. -
Check Results
Review the scanned text on your connected device. You can edit or save the text in your preferred format. -
Repeat as Needed
Continue scanning line by line, following the same direction.

The difference between scanning Arabic text with the Scanmarker Pro and reading Arabic text lies in the functional design of the device and the process of digitizing text:
1. Reading Direction (Right-to-Left)
- Arabic Script: Arabic is traditionally read and written from right to left, starting from the top right corner of a page and proceeding horizontally to the left.
- Human Cognition: This direction aligns with the natural flow of Arabic script for comprehension.
2. Scanning Mechanism (Left-to-Right)
- Technology Optimization: The Scanmarker Pro is designed to scan text in the direction that most OCR (Optical Character Recognition) algorithms operate best—left to right. This is due to historical and technical reasons, as many languages read and scan in that direction.
- Digital Processing: Scanning from left to right allows the pen to sequentially capture and analyze individual characters or words in the correct order for recognition.
3. Text Output Alignment
- Despite scanning from left to right, the device's software reorganizes the text in the correct reading order (right to left) for Arabic. This ensures that the digital output matches the original Arabic layout, preserving meaning and structure.
Why Can’t Scanning Follow the Reading Direction?
- Hardware Design: The scanning sensor and data transmission inside the pen are optimized for left-to-right movement to maintain smooth, uninterrupted scanning.
- Accuracy: Scanning right-to-left could introduce challenges in maintaining recognition accuracy, as the text would be captured in reverse order for the OCR to process.
